Brighouse and Rastrick Band, directed by their Professional Conductor Professor David King came runners up at National Finals at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday 10th October. Pipped at the post by Welsh Band Cory, B&R were the top placed English band and will now represent England at the European Brass Band Festival in Belgium in 2017 as well as guaranteeing their place at next year’s Albert Hall final.
This accolade comes a month after the Band came runners-up at the British Open Contest at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. The Band have already qualified to represent England at the 2016 European Brass Band Festival which will be held in Lille, France during April 2016.
The Band played a performance of the fiendishly difficult test piece “Spiriti” by Thomas Doss which adjudicator Stephen Roberts described as “a stunning performance exuding quality and musical splendour”. There was a near capacity audience at the Royal Albert Hall and the band received rapturous applause and a standing ovation for their performance.
Other Yorkshire Bands competing at the contest were Grimethorpe Colliery (placed 10th) Black Dyke (placed 11th) and Carlton Main Frickley Colliery (placed 14th).
The next opportunity to see B&R live will be at Huddersfield Town Hall on Saturday 24th October when the Band will share the stage with Band of the King’s Division and the guest conductor for the evening will be Rob Wiffin OBE. Tickets are available from Kirklees Ticket Outlets (01484 223200). This concert will be in support of the work of the Royal British Legion and a donation will be made by B&R to this year’s Poppy Appeal during the concert.
