Brighouse & Rastrick Band would like to announce a number of personnel changes in the Band that includes an influx of talented young players.
A special acknowledgement must firstly be given to 2nd Euphonium player David Belshaw who has served in the Band since 2011. Winning a Yorkshire and a National title during his tenure, David’s extensive experience, teamwork and character will be missed by the Band and we all wish him well on his new endeavours.
As one door closes, however, another opens. With such an important seat to fill, B&R acted quickly to secure the talents of young RNCM student Daniel Thomas. Dan joins from the Principal Euphonium chair at the Blackburn & Darwen Band where he has played for over 5 years. As a pupil of Dave Thornton and Steven Mead it will be exciting to hear him develop as a performer with B&R.
Likewise, the personable cornet player Elizabeth Tonge bolsters the Solo Cornet bench after impressing Prof. David King in concerts prior to the Yorkshire Areas this year. At 19, the former Smithills School and Wingates Principal Cornet player, now a 1st Year Undergraduate at the Royal Northern College of Music, already brings with her a wealth of experience, not to mention a beautiful tone on the instrument.
Sam Gibson also joins the Band on 2nd cornet following Joey Williams’s promotion to Repiano Cornet. Sam is currently in his final year at the RNCM, having studied under Richard Marshall and Roger Webster. After short spells at Newstead and Ashton-under-lyne band, we’re excited to have Sam as a welcome addition to the back row.
Last, but by no means least, our award-winning bass section gains Belfast-born tuba star Conall Gormley. The former Ulster and Irish Youth Orchestra player is also a 1st Year student at the RNCM. Under the tutelage of Ewan Easton he has many years ahead of him to fulfil our expectations of being a leading exponent of the tuba.
